TekstiTämä on erikoisominaisuus.
Word, a basic un
Word, a basic unit of language. Words illustrate both the past and the present of a language. The vocabulary of a language is an open system which expands according the requirements of use. Particularly in the written language, vocabulary can be deliberately created to serve the needs of social use, and in the early stages of written expression this kind of deliberate development of the language is necessary and important. A language tells us about its past through the words that have come into it naturally. Saami has about 700 ancient original words, of which about 300 can be traced back to the parent language of Saami and Finnish, Early Proto-Finnic, and the rest of which are even older. Saami also has numerous loan words, which tell of the languages that earlier stages of the Saami language was in contact with. These were Indo-European languages: some words were borrowed thousands of years ago from Proto-Indo-European or the Aryan (Indo-Iranian) languages. Others were borrowed later (1000-3000 years ago) from the Germanic and Baltic (proto-) languages, and in more recent centuries from Scandinavian languages and Russian. There are also many Finnish loan words in Saami, and reciprocally Finnish, especially its northern dialects, has borrowed words from Saami. From native and borrowed word stems an infinite number of new vocabulary items are created through derivation and compounding. Languages also contain many words whose origins are unknown. For example, in Proto-Saami there are hundreds of roots for which one cannot find corresponding forms in related languages or sources from which they were borrowed. And further examples of such isolate words can be found in the individual Saami languages.
ami languages|Saami languages]].
 +
