<P align="justify"> [[Reindeer|Reind … <P align="justify"> [[Reindeer|Reindeer]] were not milked in the earliest phase of reindeer husbandry. Milking was probably introduced as a result of the example of the cattle raising Scandinavians. This is also indicated by the dairy terminology of the Saami (e.g. <i>mielki</i> milk is a Scandinavian loan word, cf. Norwegian <i>melk</i>, <i>mjølk</i>). The word <i>náhppi</i> a ladle for milking reindeer (made from the gnarl of a tree) is also of Scandinavian origin. There are corresponding forms in all the Saami languages, e.g. South Saami <i>naehpie</i>, Inari Saami <i>näppi</i>, Skolt <i>näˊpp</i>; cf. Old Norwegian <i>hnappr</i> and Swedish dialect <i>napp</i> bowl, goblet . The source of the Proto-Saami word could be the Proto-Scandinavian accusative singular form <i>*hnappa</i>. The Finnish words <i>nappo</i>, <i>na(a)ppa</i> wooden ladel are from the same Scandinavian source. It is also possible that the Finnish and Saami words have influenced each other.</p>
