Turi, Johan (1854 36), writer and artist. Johan Turi was born into a reindeer-herding family in Kautokeino in Norway. By 1870 he had moved with his parents to Jukkasjärvi in Sweden in search of better grazing ranges. This move was part of the migrations of reindeer-herding Saamis from Kautokeino to the south. Turi earned his livelihood herding reindeer, hunting and fishing.

In 1904 his life changed when he met the Danish artist Emilie Demant-Hatt, who encouraged him to write and helped to get him published. He wrote a book called Muittalus samid birra [A Tale of the Saami], which came out in 1910. The text is illustrated with the writer's own drawings. In it he strove to relate and illustrate the essence of the Saami way of life. He describes many aspects of the reindeer herders living conditions: life in the forests with the reindeer, the reindeer corrals, the different living conditions in summer and winter, the camps, the traditions, hunting, the Saami cosmology, and so on. His book brought him recognition, and it has been translated into several languages: German (1912), English (1917), Swedish (1917), French (1974) and Finnish (1979). Turi's other works are Lappish Texts (1918 19) and Från fjället [From the Fell] (1913). His oeuvre is of considerable importance in Saami-language literature, and it is has particular historical documentary significance. Turi was awarded a Royal Gold Medal and a State Writer's pension.
