Saba, Isak (1875 …
Saba, Isak (1875 1921), editor, writer and Saami politician. Isak Saba was born on 15 November 1875 in Unjárga on the Varanger (Várjjat) peninsula in northern Norway. He qualified as a teacher in the Tromsø Seminary in 1898, after which he passed some extra studies, for example in Kristiansund/Kristiansand. In 1904 he obtained a post as a teacher and parish clerk in Unjárga. Later he moved to Vardö. Saba is considered to be the national poet of the Saami as he wrote the words to the present Saami national anthem Sámi soga lávlla [Song of the Saami Clan], and it is for this that he is now perhaps best remembered. It was published in the periodical Sagai Muittalaegje in 1906. He was also the first Saami to be elected to the Norwegian Storting (Parliament), where he represented East Finmark between 1906 and 1912. In the parliament he strove above all to further the affairs of the Saami, while in his home region he tried to keep the Saami informed about what was happening in the parliament.
