The Saami schools have carried on the tradition of the old nomad schools. Since 1962 they have operated on a parallel and equal footing with the municipal comprehensive schools. The Saami schools have between one and six grades, and there are altogether six of them: in Gárasavvon, Láttevárri (Lannavaara), Giron (Kiruna), Váhčir (Gällivare) and Johkamohkki (Jokkmokk) in the Province of Norbotten and in Deardná (Tärnaby) in the Province of Västerbotten. Teaching is in both Saami and Swedish, but the emphasis in the instruction is on the Saami language and Saami culture. The Saami schools are very small with an average of only 25 pupils each. In 1980, the Saami schools came under the jurisdiction of a special board on which both the central government and the Saami people were represented. After the Saami Parliament began to operate, the administration of the Saami schools became part of its province. The head office of the Saami schools administration, Sameskolestyrelse, is located in Jokkmokk.

Education
lt;P> Education
+
