The North Saami w …
The North Saami word guovssahasat Northern Lights, Aurora Borealis is derives from the same root as guovssu, a general Saami word meaning (evening or) morning twilight . It also belongs to the same word family as the North Saami verb guovssahastit to shine, blaze (of the Northern Lights) . Similar related derivations, albeit formed slightly differently, referring to the Northern Lights are found in all the western Saami languages (e.g. South Saami goeksegh) and of the eastern languages in Inari and Skolt Saami (kuuskõõzz). According to the most recent explanation, the root is an ancient borrowing from a Proto-Indo-European word, the descendants of which include the Latin word aurora dawn and the English word east.
<P alig`="justify"> The root guoksV-, or rather the element guok- (< *kuok- <(?) *kak-) has also been related to the Lule Saami verb guohkat to shine and the Finnish word family kaakko, kakko, kako meaning south-east . The stem of the onomatopoeic kaakkuri red-throated diver (Gavia stellata) appears to be phonetically the same as this word family, and the Saami guovssu twilight would likewise seem to be phonetically identical with the stem of the word [[Guovssat (Saami word to a bird species)|guovssat]] Siberian jay (Perisoreus infaustus) .
ian jay (Perisoreus infaustus) .
+
