Lule Saami Language: Child welfare and edu … Lule Saami Language: Child welfare and education

There are two Saami pre-schools in Sweden for children between the ages of one and five, Giella in Jokkmokk and Skierri in Gällivare, where local variations of Lule Saami are spoken. In Drag, in Norway, there is the Árran mánnágárdde (Árran kindergarten), where the day care centre's language is Lule Saami.

Teaching in Saami, or the teaching of Saami in Saami schools, in Sweden, is obligatory. Teaching is carried out in Lule Saami in Jokkmokk and Gällivare. Teaching in Saami is provided in grades 1 to 3 and 4 to 6, for a few hours a week. In the Jokkmokk Saami School, the number of pupils in North and Lule Saami in the school year of 2002-3 was approximately the same. In public primary schools and senior secondary schools, Lule Sami is taught in a few places. Since a nine-year basic education is obligatory in Sweden, students from Saami schools continue their education in the public secondary school system and possibly at the senior secondary school level with other students who do not speak Saami. However, students can choose whether or not they wish to continue to study in Saami at secondary and senior secondary school levels. Outside the central region of Lule Saami, it is often difficult to recruit teachers into traditional education, and experiments are therefore being made with distance teaching via the Internet.

In Norway, pupils are taught in Lule Saami at the primary school level, especially at Drag Shool/Ájluokta skåvllå. The school has classes in Saami, and Lule Sami can be studied as a first or second language and to a lesser extent in a subject called 'Language and culture'. Árran, the Lule Saami Centre, provides distance teaching in language for various primary schools as well as secondary and senior secondary schools. Interviews with students have shown that they often lack the opportunities for hearing and speaking Lule Saami outside the classroom and that the teachers lack adequate teaching materials. At the Saami Education Centre in Jokkmokk, adults are provided with distance teaching in Lule Saami. A number of adults study the language within the scope of study circle activities or when so-called literacy courses are organised.

Teaching in Lule Saami is periodically arranged at the University of Umeå and at the Bodö Teacher Training College. Students who take an advanced-level course in the subject of Saami at the University of Tromsø and at the University of Uppsala are taught the basics of Lule Saami grammar and to understand Lule Saami texts.
