Gottlund s significance in Finnish cultural history is above all based on his work collecting and publishing the folklore of the so-called Forest Finns (Finnish inhabitants of Central Scandinavia who originally moved there as settlers in the late sixteenth century). He became a dissident within the Finnish nationalist movement, but he was one of the pioneers of Finnish Lappology. In his extensive scientific and literary Finnish reader Otava I-II Ursus Major I-II , he published the first ethnomusicological study of the Saami juoiggus chant (1832) with examples of juoiggus lyrics and coloured picture of a Saami man and woman drawn by G. He also knew both Lars Levi and Petrus Laestadius, and with the former he engaged in a lively dispute over the nature of the folk religion of the Saami in connection with Laestadius Fragments of Lappish Mythology.
thumb|600px|Gottlund's picture of Saami people
However, Gottlund was an enthusiastic supporter of national languages and a defender of the rights of the Saami.

Table of contents: Biographical articles‏‎

graphical articles‏‎]]

+
