The whitefish (Coregonus lavaretus) is a salmonoid common in the cold, oxygen-rich waters of the region. Whitefish vary in length from 20 to 55 cm and generally weight 0.2-1.5 kg, rarely exceeding 5 kg. They spawn in autumn on the shallow gravel beds of rivers or lakes, and the eggs hatch the following spring. They feed off zooplankton, bottom-dwelling animals, insects and their larvae. Whitefish have been extensively planted in a wide range of waters in the hope of obtaining better catches.

{{Artikkelilinkki|0808|Fish}}
