This Germanic word family is represented today by the Swedish <i>vända</i> and the Norwegian <i>vende</i>, both meaning to bend, twist and German Want (nautical) shroud ; cf. also Gothic <i>vandu-s</i> a whip, stick for beating .</p> <P align="justify"> To this Germanic word family also belong Low German <i>want</i> (nautical) a shroud, stay , which along with sailing was borrowed into Scandinavian languages (cf.
