Method of fishing probably developed out of the primitive use of spears for catching fish, but the spear was supplanted by a three-pronged harpoon. The harpooning was done in the dark from a boat in shallow water by the shore. In the prow of the boat there was a metal plate on which a fire was made from wood dipped in tar. The fishermen observed the bottom of the water carefully in the light of the fire as the boat gently moved forward. The fish was mesmirized by the light and was easy to harpoon.
