Ruota Sámiid Riikkasearvi (RSR)/Svenska Samernas Riksförbund (SSR) National Union of the Swedish Saami was founded in Jokkmokk in 1950. It is today the leading Saami organization in Sweden. It administers and represents all the reindeer grazing areas. RSR has prosecuted numerous cases against the state, the best-known of which was the Tax Fell Case . This concerned the right of the Saamis to their traditional usufructuary lands in the tax fells in the northern parts of the region of Jämtland, to which, according to RSR, the Saami had a better claim than the Crown. The case dragged on for fifteen years, from May 1966 to January 1981, when the Swedish Supreme Court rejected the claims of the Saami. The secretariat of RSR is located in Jokkmokk.
