A structure for storing hay. Poles made of trimmed pine branches were planted upright in a marsh at distances of about a metre apart. A bed was also made of pine poles. Other poles were laid lengthwise and attached to supports to create a platform about a metre above the ground. The hay was loaded with rakes in big sheets between the frames. Tree trunks and branches were placed on top of the hay to prevent the wind from blowing it away. Finally the whole structure was fencedaround so that reindeer would not break it up. The purpose of a suova was to store hay, not to dry it.
