The word čuoika midge, mosquito has counterparts in all the Saami languages (e.g. South Saami tjoeihke and Skolt čuoškk). The Finnish sääski midge is undoubtedly related; Finnish, like the Mordvin šeške, which has the same meaning, point to an original Finnic-Volgan form * šäške, whereas the Saami word would require an original form with a back vowel * šaške.

The word is probably onomatopoeic in origin (as is indicated by the phonetic variety). Similar names for flying and stinging insects are found in Iranian and Turkic languages, but it has not been determined whether this is a result of anything other than coincidence.
