<P align="justify"> Language, spoken and written, is the main tool of human communication. In defining the Saami language it has often been necessary to draw a distinction between a {{Artikkelilinkki|0116|dialect}} and a language. The main criterion is comprehension: people who speak different languages cannot understand one another. According to this criterion, there are considered to be several different Saami languages today. The most commonly suggested number is ten. There are not many sharp boundaries between the different Saami languages; rather they form a continuum in which there is a broad belt of {{Artikkelilinkki|0117|isoglosses}} between two varieties and a gradual transition between one language and another. It is also possible to define a language socially, in which case the boundary between languages follows a national frontier. This definition, however, is not suitable for categorizing the Saami languages because several of them are spoken across state frontiers. In most contexts, the term Saami language refers to the largest and most widely spoken Saami language: {{Artikkelilinkki|0102|North Saami}}. The Saami languages can from the historical linguistic point of view be divided into two main groups with the border lying between North Saami and {{Artikkelilinkki|0107|Inari Saami}}. In addition to {{Artikkelilinkki|0107|Inari Saami}}, the eastern Saami languages include {{Artikkelilinkki|0108|Skolt Saami}}, {{Artikkelilinkki|0109|Kildin Saami}} and Ter Saami. In addition to North Saami, the western Saami languages are {{Artikkelilinkki|0106|Lule Saami}}, {{Artikkelilinkki|0105|Pite Saami}}, {{Artikkelilinkki|0104|Ume Saami}} and {{Artikkelilinkki|0103|South Saami}}. See these articles for more information about each language and the history of the written language.</P> {{Kuvalinkki|davvinKi.jpg|The Saami languages}}
