Although the lakes and rivers freeze over in winter in the north, this does not prevent fishing. One method of winter fishing involves the use of nets under the ice. It starts as soon as the ice is sufficiently thick in the late autumn, usually in November, and it continues till January. In the depth of winter, the fish are not very active and fishing is laborious because of the ice is too thick. In some places this method of fishing restarts as winter turns into spring. Fishing with nets under the ice is mainly practised in lakes.

The North Saami name for such nets is juoŋas. Related words are used in eastern Saami languages like Inari, Skolt, Kildin and Ter. It would appear to be an ancient original Saami word; so far it has not been possible to show any other source for it. It has been borrowed into north Finnish dialects with the same meaning in the form juomus.

Look also {{Artikkelilinkki|0775|Juoŋas fi. juomus}}

{{Artikkelilinkki|20140806094530|Table of contents: Etymology}}

{{Artikkelilinkki|20140716162429|Table of contents: Means of livelyhood and transport}}
