This monophonous vocal music is the traditional form of Saami music. The word chant can be used to describe the phenomenon in its different manifestations in the area inhabited by the Saami. This area can be roughly divided into three different regions according to the style of chanting: # the South and West Saami region, # the North Saami region and # and the East Saami region. North Saami chants are traditionally pentatonic and anhemitonic (without semitones) melodies based on the repetition of two or more phrases. The words of a chant are usually few in number, and they are highly figurative. The chant of the South and West Saami region often contains even fewer words than that of the North. It also features a variety of microtones and semitones. Microtonal intervals are also a feature of East Saami chants, especially those of the Kildin Saami. The scales are also without intervals. The verbal content of these chants is long and narrative, often relating myths and legends.

Different words are used in the above mentioned regions to refer to the chant.
