It is a derivative of the word gállu brow, skull or scalp (of a reindeer) . A word with this meaning is found all {{Artikkelilinkki|20140721171759|Saami languages}}. It is a borrowing from the Finnish word kallo skull . The derivative meaning a shoe is also known throughout the area where Saami is spoken. It has also been borrowed into neighbouring languages: in Finnish it appears as kallokas, and in the dialect of Russian spoken in the Pechenga region it has taken the form kallaka, both of which have the same meaning as the Saami word. The Finnish word kallo, which is the source of the Saami words for skull, is not Finnic in origin. It was borrowed from a Scandinavian word, which is found in present-day Norwegian and Swedish in the form skalle skull .
{{Artikkelilinkki|1152|Gámas}}
{{Artikkelilinkki|11117|Gállohat, traditional boots}}

{{Artikkelilinkki|20140806094530|Table of contents: Etymology}}

{{Artikkelilinkki|20140806092921| Table of contents: Living and household, clothing etc.}}
