<P align= justify > There is a crying need for educational materials in the Saami languages. The production of such materials is the responsibility of the Saami Parliaments. In Norway, the Saami Parliament receives 10 12 million Norwegian <I>kronor</I> annually for this purpose; in Sweden the sum is about one million Swedish kronor, and in Finland approx. 333,000. Textbooks are lacking in practically all subjects, even in the Saami languages themselves; for example there is a lack of textbooks for teaching Saami as a second language. All in all, it is estimated that there are 800 textbooks or sets of material suitable as textbooks. However, most of the books required by the syllabi in the different counties (Norway, Finland and Sweden) are missing, and the syllabi differ from each other to the extent that Saami-language books produced in one country cannot be used in another. Most of the material is written in North Saami, and is intended for the lower grades (1 6). The worst situation exists in the minority Saami languages such as Skolt and Inari Saami and at the upper secondary level. Attempts have been made to make good the deficiencies by translating textbooks and exercise books from the majority languages into Saami in subjects like mathematics, biology, history and geography. For adult education, there exist two series of textbooks in North Saami (<I>Davvin</I> and <I>Sámás</I>) with accompanying cassette tapes. A Lule Saami version of <I>Davvin</I> came out in 2002. In order to improve the education of Saamis and to revive and increase the use of the Saami languages it is imperative that more funds be allocated for the production of original Saami-language educational materials in the form of textbooks, tapes, virtual learning materials, etc.</P>
