This organ was established in 1971 at the Seventh Saami Conference in Gällivare, Sweden. The aim of the Board has from the outset been to take responsibility for all questions regarding [[Modern Saami languages|the Saami language]], including matters of correct usage, development of terminology and language legislation. Its major achievement has been the creation of a common Nordic orthography for North Saami, which was officially adopted in 1978. The members of the Board and their deputies are appointed according to the principle of one per language group from Finland, Norway, Russia and Sweden. The secretariat is based in Kautokeino, operating initially in conjunction with the Saami Institute, and since 1996 with the Norwegian Saami Language Council. Administratively, until 1996 the Language Board operated under the {{Artikkelilinkki|0583|Saami Council}}, but since then it has been under the auspices of the {{Artikkelilinkki|0524|Saami Parliamentary Council}}, a joint organ of the Saami Parliaments.
