The char (Salvelinus alpinus) is a salmonoid and the most northern fresh-water fish in the world. It is found in the extremely cold and oxygen-rich waters of the upper fells. Some chars migrate to the sea, others live in lakes and arctic streams. The smallest chars grow to 10-30 cm in length and weigh 0.3 to 2.5 kg, while the largest ones are over 5 kg in weight. They spawn in autumn in the gravel beds and skerries of lakes, and the smaller species in Arctic streams. In the lakes, different species of char feeding off zooplankton, bottom-dwelling animals and other fish respectively live together.
{{Artikkelilinkki|0808|Fish}}
{{Kuvalinkki|Rautu3.jpg|Brown trout}}
