<P align= justify > When a seine fis … <P align= justify > When a seine fishing party set out, the seine was taken down from the drying poles (ulku), and the boats were rowed out side by side to the fishing ground. The end of the seine was thrown into the water, and the boats set off to pull the wings of the seine in opposite directions. When the net ran out, the boats turned back towards each other, and from each boat a towing warp was thrown into the water. Then a pole was planted in the bed of the river and the boat was tied up to it. The towing rope was now hauled in completely onto a windlass in the middle of the boat. The boats were rowed forward, and again a towing rope was thrown into the water and wound in. The process was repeated until the boats were side by side. Then the seine was hauled in. The net man pulled in the seine and his assistant (puittio) frightened the fish by striking the water with a pole (porkka, porkkaus)to prevent them from trying to escape under the boats and drive them into the end of the seine. After the fishingtrip was over, the catch was divided into five equal parts: one for each of the fishermen, and one for the owner of the seine.</P> one for the owner of the seine.</P> +
