It is possible to distinguish geographically and chronologically limited distributions of types of archaeological material, which are called archaeological cultures. There is no common agreement about what an archaeological culture represents vis-à-vis the reality of the past. On one hand, it is claimed that an archaeological culture is merely an artificial unit for dealing with archaeological material in a constructed system of classification; on the other, it is considered that an archaeological culture is distinguished in the material just because a prehistoric community with a common tradition and a common system of communication to support it leaves behind a characteristic distribution of types of archaeological material and a semiotic system of signs. This is the basis for research into the origins and "roots" of an ethnic group (such as the Saami) and its culture.

Archaeology.

Ethnic identification.

Ceramics.

Table of contents: Archaeology

Otsikko 102
