Earmarking of a reindeer
A reindeer calf, miessi has to be earmarked during its first winter to show whom it belongs to. When it follows its mother it can be identified as the calf of that particular reindeer, because by the following spring it would grow into a čearpmat ( reindeer husbandry: terminology) and would leave its mother. (reindeer marking in the hair). The general name of an earmark of a reindeer is a word or a deed, for example(cut above the reindeer ear) gieška, (a main deed cut obliquely) njavki, (a main deed cut from below) hoaŋka, (an extra earmark) ceahkes and (the end of a reindeer ear cut away) gaskat are words or deeds. The words or deeds are divided into the main and extra earmarks. The main earmarks show the family to which the reindeer belongs, and the extra earmarks show an individual member of the family it belongs to. A reindeer which is not earmarked is called geažotbeallji.
