Its purpose is to promote sport among young people and thereby to strengthen their Saami identity and solidarity. The Union goes back to the 1940s, when some young Saamis studying in Jokkmokk in Sweden organized a Saami ski competition. As a result of this activity the first Saami sports organization, Svenska Samernas Skiförbund, the Swedish Saami Ski Association was founded. </P>
