Historical age

The period of time during which a society itself and/or external sources relating to it have produced written information that sheds light on the conditions obtaining in the society in question. The Historical Age in Scandinavia is considered to have begun at the end of the Viking Age A.D. c. 1050, but for the hunting communities of the north the starting point is made the Treaty of Pähkinäsaari (Nöteborg, now Oreshek) in A.D. 1323. The Historical Age in Finland is considered to have begun with the Age of the Crusades, and accordingly it is chronologically gradated through different parts of the country. From the Finnish point of view, the year for Karelia (A.D.1300) is used for the whole of eastern and northern Fennoscandia. From the point of view of archaeology, the Late Iron Age and thus the Prehistoric Age can be regarded as continuing almost into the mid-fourteenth century in northern Fennoscandia.
