The Saami schools have between one and six grades, and there are altogether six of them: in Gárasavvon, Láttevárri (Lannavaara), Giron (Kiruna), Váhčir (Gällivare) and Johkamohkki (Jokkmokk) in the Province of Norbotten and in Deardná (Tärnaby) in the Province of Västerbotten. Teaching is in both Saami and Swedish, but the emphasis in the instruction is on the Saami language and Saami culture. The Saami schools are very small with an average of only 25 pupils each. In 1980, the Saami schools came under the jurisdiction of a special board on which both the central government and the Saami people were represented. After the Saami Parliament began to operate, the administration of the Saami schools became part of its province. Saamelaiskoulu
Saamelaiskoulu on saamelaislapsille tarkoitettu valtion koulu Ruotsissa. Saamelaiskoulut jatkavat vanhojen ns. nomadikoulujen perinnettä. Vuodesta 1962 on saamelaiskoulu toiminut rinnakkain ja tasaveroisena oppilaitoksena kunnallisen peruskoulun kanssa. Saamelaiskoulussa on vuosiluokat 1 - 6, ja kouluja on yhteensä kuusi, Kaaresuvannossa, Lannavaarassa, Kiirunassa, Jällivaarassa ja Jokkmokissa Norrbottenin läänissä, sekä Tärnabyssa Västerbottenin läänissä. Opetusta annetaan sekä saameksi että ruotsiksi. Pääpaino opetuksessa on saamen kielessä ja saamelaiskulttuurissa. Saamelaiskoulut ovat hyvin pieniä, keskimäärin 25 oppilasta kussakin koulussa. 1980 saamelaiskouluja alkoi johtaa erityinen hallitus, johon kuului sekä hallituksen että saamelaisten edustus. Saamelaiskäräjien aloitettua toimintansa koulun hallinto siirtyi käräjien alaisuuteen. Saamelaiskouluhallinnon (Sameskolestyrelse) kanslia sijaitsee Jokkmokissa.
